New SAF bill to support SAF production in the UK

During the State Opening of Parliament on July 17, King Charles unveiled government plans for the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Revenue Support Mechanism) Bill for the UK. This new legislation aims to support the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by introducing a revenue certainty mechanism crucial for financing SAF projects.

Currently, the UK has only one SAF producer, Phillips 66, at their Humber refinery. Biofuels News reports that the introduction of this bill signals the new Labour Government's commitment to building a robust SAF production industry. Noaman Al Adhami, Alfanar’s UK Country Head, highlighted the importance of this bill for their £1.5bn SAF project in Teesside, emphasizing the need for swift implementation to meet project timelines.

Lead in sustainable aviation

The proposed bill is critical for the UK's ambition to lead in sustainable aviation. By providing revenue support, it aims to attract investments and accelerate the development of SAF production facilities. This move aligns with global trends towards cleaner aviation fuels and the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector.

According to Biofuels News, the introduction of the SAF Revenue Support Mechanism Bill is a significant step towards establishing a sustainable aviation fuel industry in the UK, ensuring the country plays a pivotal role in the global shift towards greener air travel.
