IATA unveils SAF registry to boost emissions reporting
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is set to launch a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry, aimed at enhancing emissions reporting across the aviation sector. Major airlines, such as Air France-KLM, and key stakeholders have already committed to this initiative, underscoring the industry's push towards sustainability.
Airport Technology reports that The SAF Registry, set to launch in the first quarter of 2025, is designed to improve the accuracy of emissions reductions reporting. This initiative has already garnered the support of 17 airlines, one airline group, six national authorities, three original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and one fuel producer. During the 80th AGM in Dubai, prominent airlines, alongside authorities from Brazil, Singapore, and Switzerland, committed to the registry.
Trusted system is needed
Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, emphasized the registry’s comprehensive benefits for SAF stakeholders. “Governments need a trusted system to track the quality and quantities of SAF used. SAF producers need to accurately account for what has been delivered and effectively decarbonized. Corporate customers must be able to transparently account for their Scope 3 emissions, and airlines must have certainty that they can claim the environmental benefits of the SAF they purchased. The registry will meet all these needs,” Walsh explained according to Airport Technology.
The registry will enhance the geographic scope of SAF by facilitating the purchase of SAF from anywhere in the world with accurate emissions recording. It aims to provide standardized data neutral to regulations, supporting compliance with schemes like the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.
