GE offers technologies to reduce CO₂ emissions
Aircraft engine manufacturer GE is announcing new efforts to shape the future of flight with innovations that improve fuel efficiency. GE has spent $1.6 billion on aviation research and development in 2021, including emissions-reducing technologies.
In its ‘sustainable aviation blog’ GE states that it is dedicated to introducing more fuel-efficient engines than their predecessors. To lower CO₂ emissions further, CE has a robust innovation pipeline to help the industry become more sustainable.
Boeing’s efforts include a partnership between Airbus and CFM International to conduct flight tests of a hydrogen-powered engine. Also, there is a partnership with NASA and Boeing to develop and fly a megawatt-class hybrid electric propulsion system. Third is the RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines) Program, which includes development of advanced new engine architectures such as open fan, along with other technologies. The goal of the RISE Program is to achieve at least 20% lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to today’s most efficient engines.
In the blog, GE mentions its ‘360 Foam Wash’ (or Wash & Go), an advanced on-wing cleaning technology with a proprietary detergent to help ensure that engines continue to operate efficiently, reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. Aviation software solutions from GE Digital make fuel savings recommendations, such as FlightPulse©, a flight analytics tool for pilots.
