Catagen submits first SAF sample to EU SAF clearing house

Northern Ireland’s Catagen is the first to submit a sustainable aviation fuel sample to the EU SAF Clearing House, marking a step forward in net-zero aviation efforts. The EU SAF Clearing House, launched in July 2024, supports SAF producers by providing comprehensive evaluation and certification services. 

The News Letter reports that Northern Ireland-based net-zero technologies company Catagen has become the first to submit a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sample to the newly established EU SAF Clearing House. This submission represents a significant milestone in the development and deployment of SAF, which is seen as a critical element in reducing aviation emissions. 

Crucial facilitator 

The EU SAF Clearing House is a crucial facilitator in the development and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Its primary role is to streamline the process of SAF approval and encourage its widespread use in aviation. In essence, the EU SAF Clearing House acts as a catalyst, accelerating the development and deployment of SAF by removing barriers and providing essential support to fuel producers. This ultimately contributes to the decarbonization of the aviation sector. 

Wind, water, air and waste 

According to the News Letter report, Catagen's SAF is developed using renewable resources like wind, water, air, and sustainable organic waste. Dr. Stephen Dooley, Director of the EU SAF Clearing House, expressed enthusiasm for Catagen’s submission, emphasizing the role of the Clearing House in guiding SAF producers through the certification process.
