“Welcome. Passport and social media account please”

Your passport may soon be not enough to enter the United States. The Department of Homeland Security has plans to ask foreign visitors to hand over information on their social media accounts when they arrive. The data would help screen people for ties to terrorism.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) division of the DHS has announced that it wants to add an important line to Form I-94W. This is the form used by people who enter the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program for 90 days without a visa. The line would say, “Please enter information associated with your online presence - Provider/Platform – Social media identifier.”

Fortune reports that, for the time being, providing the information is voluntary. Some say that voluntary disclosure will not be enough. A republican senator has stated that “voluntary disclosure won’t keep anyone safe. If we want to win on the digital battlefield, mandatory screening is required.”
