The world’s largest building in Chengdu - China
The largest freestanding building is built in Chengdu, China. The New Century Global Center contains businesses, shops, a theatre and a hotel.
At 500 meters long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high, it is big enough to hold 20 Sydney Opera Houses. The building is located in the Tainfu New District in the outskirts of Chengdu.
The structure is part of Chengdu’s bid for top-tier city status. Chengdu is China’s seventh-largest city by population and is to become the economic capital of western China. Like many Chinese megacities, this hub of 14 million inhabitants is rapidly expanding, with a growing subway system and a new airport planned for 2020. The New Century Global Center is not going to be the last project in Chengdu. Not far from the center, the Chengdu Contemporary Arts Center, will soon become home to an opera house, theater and museum.
