The bizarre task that hotel housekeepers face
Working for hotel housekeeping departments requires a lot of energy, perseverance and ingenuity. A recent survey by the Hotel Show Dubai – a trade show held in the Gulf city – showed that Dubai’s housekeepers have to go to great lengths to make guest feel at home, including assisting at childbirth.
The Hotel Show Dubai has revealed some interesting details of the day-to-day lives of the city’s thousands of housekeeping staff. The survey showed that the workers face bizarre tasks to meet every guest’s needs. The job sometimes requires scrubbing priceless designer handbags and polish priceless jewellery or remove stains from expensive luggage to cleaning balconies at the time of a sandstorm.
Hoteliermiddleeast.com offers some stunning tales from the lives of hotel housekeepers. It reports that “several housekeepers recalled becoming makeshift midwives when pregnant guests’ babies decided to arrive unexpectedly early – and when they were the nearest helping hands.” Other housekeepers report having to honour very specific requests. One hotel guest wanted to have the entire floor of his hotel room covered with linen, including the bathroom, due to being allergic to walking on the carpet on the floor. Obviously, the guest was not let down.
“The results go to prove exactly why Dubai’s vast international housekeeping teams are the backbone of the region’s world-leading holiday destination,” commented Gary Williams, event director of The Hotel Show Dubai.
