Shanghai builds underground hotel
If you want to know what it is like to live in a hole in the ground, you might as well do it in style. In Shanghai, construction companies are building a huge, luxurious underground five-star hotel. Adventure meets luxury!
The hotel that is currently being built in a massive 80-meter deep, abandoned quarry in the Shanghai suburbs, will open in 2015. It is to be promoted as the lowest hotel in the world. The new hotel is to be managed by InterContinental Hotels Group and will go by the name of ‘InterContinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland’, the structure is expected to have three floors above ground level; it will extend 16 floors into the bottom of the pit.
The hotel in the new category – ‘groundscaper’ instead of skyscraper – will feature an artificial waterfall and lake. There are plans to take advantage of the site's surrounding cliffs; the hotel could host activities such as rock climbing and bungee jumping.
Room rates are expected to start at US$320, twice the price currently charged by other five-star hotels in Shanghai.
