NY opens first new subway station in 25 years

New York has opened up its first new subway station in over 25 years. You may come across this new ‘34 st Hudson Yards’ station on your next business trip. But why not take a detour to take a look at the latest extension of New York City's 7 subway line?

The new subway station has at least three attractions that make a visit worth wile. First of all, it is brand new. Therefore, it looks and smells clean and there is no graffiti in sight, which in itself is pretty unique.

Second: the new 34st Hudson Yards station has some wonderful bright blue mosaics on its walls and entrances by artist Xenobia Bailey. Art and transportation go together very well at this station. And third: the escalators are among the longest you will ever come across in the New York subway system. The train platforms at this new station are third deepest in the entire subway system.

The first drawings of the new station were made as a part of the city's failed 2012 Olympics bid. The station was finally developed to give the western parts of mid-Manhattan an entry to to the subway system. The Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project is now well underway, and residential and commercial sites are rising above the train yards. Before, this part of Manhattan had no access to rapid transit and no links to Grand Central Station for commuters.
