New pier prepares Rio airport for Olympics and business
Brazil is preparing itself for the start of the summer Olympics. New and expanded facilities at Rio de Janeiro's Tom Jobim International Airport benefit both athletes, business travellers, as well as the general public.
The airport’s new facilities include a new South Pier, with high quality features and improved services. The new pier offers an additional 100,000 square metres and 26 new aerobridges, including three aerobridges that can accommodate the world’s largest aircraft, the A380.
The airport's existing facilities have also been ‘refreshed’. According to airport management, the €500 million investment has prepared Tom Jobim International Airport to receive the 1.5 million visitors we are expecting at the Olympic Games.
The pier features a new, modern duty free shopping area with 8,000 square metres of retail space including an exclusive section for cariocas brands. Also, on the airport, over 100 new stores are spread over 24,000 square metres. In June, the airport will start to operate new bar-coded boarding pass (BCBP) technology (including Electronic eGates fo passport clearance) to speed up transfer of passengers to the departure areas at the airport.
