Mexico City needs new airport

Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport is so crowded and short on capacity that a new airport is urgently needed. IATA, the air transport association that represents 280 airlines, has published a report that it is vital to build a new facility to alleviate the serious capacity problems at the current, overburdened airport.

Benito Juarez International Airport was built to handle a maximum number of 32 million passengers per year, but it currently serves no less than 47 million passengers, IATA states in a report. The air transport organization says that the airport is bursting at the seams, causing congestion and delays.

“A new airport is vital to enable Mexico City to benefit more fully from its ideal geographic position linking North America and Latin America”, says Peter Cerda, IATA's regional vice president for the Americas in a report by TravelPulse.

The infrastructure shortcoming hurt Mexico’s economic growth, the report states. “Mexico trails countries with much smaller home markets, including Panama, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru, and Chile,” said the IATA statement.
