The design-conscious Slo-living is a bright and airy hostel with a patio where you can sit with your glass of wine from the bar. Doubles start at €76.

The Hat, Madrid, Spain

This is one of the smartest new hip hostels in Europe, styled with concrete walls and contemporary furniture. The Hat offers smart, private en suites, which are light and airy. The hostel also offers a lovely rooftop terrace. Doubles from €60.

Basecamp Bonn, Germany

Basecamp Bonn is a huge warehouse filled with vintage caravans you can stay in. Your mobile home is in a neat row, with classic Airstream caravans and two VW transporters, each with its own outdoor area decked out with retro furniture. There are also two sleeper trains on the site. Caravans from €64.
