Hotel Jakarta (Amsterdam): green in every sense

Amsterdam is host to the new Hotel Jakarta, the ‘greenest hotel’ in The Netherlands. All energy needed by the building is generated by several resources that are located in and around the building. The hotel is also ‘green’ in a literal sense, thanks to the indoor tropical garden that was landscaped in cooperation with Amsterdam’s famous Hortus Botanicus.

Jakarta Hotel – owned by WestCord Hotels – offers 200 luxurious rooms with a distinctive Indonesian influenced style – a hint towards the colonial past of The Netherlands. Most rooms feature a balcony, with panoramic views over the river IJ on one side and looking over central station on the other. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at Café Jakarta or get a drink at Malabar. The hotel offers a wellness centre and swimming pool.

The hotel has a high level of sustainability. The beams, columns and ceilings are made of natural wood. The materials chosen are durable and have the FSC or PEFC quality mark. Almost all the used elements that have a short life span or are recyclable are reused by disassembly. The hotel employs many energy-saving measures.

Rainwater is collected to spray the subtropical indoor garden. PV panels in the facade and in the roof of the atrium collect solar energy that is converted into electricity and heats the shower water. A warmth- and cold storage system will take care of heating and cooling the hotel.

WestCord Hotels also owns the hotel on the ss Rotterdam (in Rotterdam Harbour) and Hotel New York. The Hotel Jakarta management points out its unique historic angle: “Hotel New York is the former head office from the Holland America line, from where people left for America and the ss Rotterdam is one of the former ships used for the crossing. Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam is built on the location where people would leave for the east.”
