Going for a run in noisy New Delhi
Running in the past and present
The capital of India is a mix between of the ancient and the modern. Delhi unwinds as a picture rich with culture, architecture and human diversity, rich in history, monuments, museums, gardens and exotic shows. For runners one of the biggest challenges of this crowded and noisy metropolis is to find a proper area to workout. In this Track Guide we offer two suggestions.
To deal with the Delhi heat while running, it’s best to train just before or after sunrise. Read these tips to prepare yourself to run safely in the heat and humid environment.
Lodhi Garden
Start: at the entrance at Loady Road
Distance: one lap is 2 km / 1.2 miles
The 90 acres Lodhi Garden in the middle of the city is very well kept and houses the tombs of Sayyid and Lodhi rulers. The green lush is a popular workout area for runners, walkers and yogini so it can be quite busy in the early morning and evening. There is a 2km running track which is partly paved and shaded because of some huge trees. If you’re heading to Lodhi Garden for a run, don’t forget to take a look at the spectacular architectural work from the Lodhi dynasty, originating from the 16th century. You can also explore a fine selection of Bonsai trees. There are sanitary utilities in the park and plenty of parking lots outside. The nearest metro station is secreterate metro. Lodhi Garden is open daily.
Jahanpanah City Forest
Start: at the main entrance opposite Don Bosco school in Alakhnanda
Distance: 6.7 km / 4.1 miles
Jahanpanah city forest is a sprawling 800 acres green belt located between Tughlaqabad and Chiragh Delhi, passing through Alaknanda and Greater Kailash Part II. It’s originally part of the fourth citadel of Delhi. The city forest serves green lungs for a large part of South Delhi District and has a 6.7 km running trail. A large part of the trail is covered in thick foliage which provides a good respite from the heat and has some inclines. Most of the trail is quite desolate so bring a running mate when running there. The city forest is open from 6 a.m. to about 7.30 p.m. You can park your car on the small parking lot at the entrance or take a taxi.
