Frontrunner Quito airport now carbon neutral
The airport of Quito (Ecuador) is the first carbon neutral international airport in Latin America and the Caribbean. Mariscal Sucre International Airport, a frontrunner on the continent, has achieved a carbon neutral status in ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation program.
The airport took many concrete actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to reduce fuel consumption, to increase energy efficiency, to improve water management and to maintain conservation areas for flora and fauna.
According to a report by AirportWorld, the airport vows to recalculate the carbon footprint and maintain or reduce the levels of emissions each year. This will help avoid increasing the carbon footprint, as well as offset emissions for another year.
One of the actions of the airport was offsetting its direct emissions by buying certified carbon credits in sustainable projects. AirportWorld reports that the airport has chosen the MANOA REDD+ Project which works to preserve 74,000 hectares of forest in Rondônia State, Brazil, which faces threats to its biodiversity from deforestation and illegal logging.
