Europe’s first artificial airport island is in Turkey
Turkey has just opened Europe’s first artificial island airport. The new Ordu-Giresun Airport is located on the borders of the Black Sea.
Ordu-Giresun Airport was built on reclaimed land, because the area’s mountainous terrain would have otherwise hampered aircraft operations.
The airport offers a 3,000 metre-long runway constructed from stone mastic asphalt, a 240 metre by 120 metre apron, a 250 metre by 24 metre taxiway and a 20,000 square metre terminal. Ordu-Giresun Airport has the capacity to handle around two million passengers a year.
Turkey is investing in its airports. About 13 years ago, the country had 26 airports; today there are 54. Turkey plans to open at least six more airports – taking its total to 60 or more – by 2023.
