Addis Ababa hotel rates highest in Africa

Hotel rooms in Africa are among the cheapest – and the most expensive in the world. If you are travelling to Ethiopia or Nigeria, prepare to spend more time finding a reasonable rate. STR Global research shows that Addis Ababa and Lagos have the most expensive hotel rooms on the continent.

HotelierMiddleEast reports that Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, leads the ranking, with higher rates than Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. In the first half of 2015, the average rate for a night in a Addis Ababa hotel room was €206 per night. Rate averages for other cities are €192 for Lagos, €128 for Nairobi, €108 for Cape Town, €91 for Cairo and €64 for Johannesburg.

Hotels in the Ethiopian capital are almost three times the cost of those in Johannesburg, an international business destination, with a large number of 4- and 5-star hotels. STR Global reports that Addis Ababa has a shortage of top hotels and in the growing economy (double digit for the past ten years) hotel room supply cannot keep up with demand. Demand rises further due to the fact that Addis Ababa is the seat of the African Union. The rates are still going up with almost 15% per year, compared to the 11% and 10.8% in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
