Fly-i: new global standard for sustainable aviation fuel

The launch of Fly-I, a new global standard for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), could boost the quest for decarbonization of aviation. According to the initiators, Fly-I may help incentivize more sustainable decision-making in the aviation industry.

With the deadline in 2050 in mind, SAF is often touted as an effective way for airlines to reduce their emissions in the short to medium term. With SAF being a relatively new concept, there are not many international standards to regulate it. Fly-i is intended to fill this void.

Fly-i is a new certification scheme, launched by Evident, an industry leader in certifying technologies in the field of renewable energy. Fly-i is intended to work similar to the issuing of renewable energy certificates, as a guarantee of an airline's purchase of a proportion of SAF. Simple Flying reports that the company hopes that this will create a more transparent market in the field of environmentally-friendly air travel, as well as incentivizing greater SAF use.

Evident sees the transparency that Fly-i will bring as a key step to grow the SAF industry. Its digital registry and Fly-i certificates provide an "immutable record for production-to-use-to-claim" for SAF, as well as eliminating "risks such as double counting by linking ownership claims with specific physical SAF volumes."
