Join the Air France and KLM Corporate SAF program
SAF stands for ‘Sustainable Aviation Fuel’, the name our industry uses to describe an alternative for fossil-based kerosene.
What is SAF?
SAF is one of the key levers to decarbonize the aviation industry in the future. The Air France-KLM pathway consists of several measures: fleet renewal, operational improvements, and replacing conventional kerosine with SAF. Made from non-fossil resources, such as waste oil or agricultural waste, SAF is a substitute for kerosene. The use of SAF reduces CO₂ emissions by at least 65% throughout its life cycle compared to fossil kerosene. Unfortunately, SAF is not yet available on large scale creating a gap between demand and SAF production while the price is significantly higher than conventional kerosine (up to three times higher).
Air France-KLM apply a strict sourcing policy: the SAF selected by Air France-KLM meets the strict sustainability criteria of European regulation: no competition with food chains and no deforestation. The Air France-KLM Group applies these environmental criteria also on SAF purchased outside of Europe.
In 2023, the Group was the world’s largest user of SAF for the second year in a row, representing 16% of the world’s total production. By comparison, the Group only accounts for 3% of the world’s consumption of conventional kerosene. In 2023, the Group’s airlines incorporated around 80,000 metric tons of SAF, almost doubling from 2022 levels. This represents a 1% incorporation rate. This shows our commitment in stimulating global SAF production as fast as possible, even though we have a long way to go. Note SAF represented only 0,2% of global aviation fuel production in 2023.*
