Virgin Atlantic’s first commercial transatlantic flight using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) was an historic flight. The flight, from London to New York, showcased SAF as a safe and viable alternative to traditional jet fuel, compatible with existing engines and infrastructure.

Develop commercial SAF

For over 15 years, Virgin Atlantic has led efforts to develop commercial SAF. Flight100, conducted in 2023, was a result of extensive collaboration with industry leaders like Rolls Royce, Boeing, and RMI. Chief Pilot Jon Walker, who flew the mission, emphasized the flight’s normalcy despite the groundbreaking fuel, highlighting SAF's potential as a drop-in replacement for fossil-derived jet fuel.

Young fleet

The airline’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its young, efficient fleet and its proactive approach to alternative fuels. This flight demonstrated that SAF could help achieve net-zero carbon emissions, inspiring airlines, airports, and industry partners to consider alternative fuels as a tangible solution.

Innovation and collaboration

CEO Shai Weiss and founder Richard Branson praised the innovation and collaboration that made this achievement possible. They called for greater production and scaling of SAF, stressing that industry-wide efforts and government support are crucial for meeting future demand and environmental goals.

Virgin Atlantic says it will continue to push boundaries in aviation, aiming to drive sustainable business practices and inspire action across the industry.
