New technology Honeywell: SAF from ethanol
Tech giant Honeywell International Inc has revealed a new technology that may help increase the supply of lower-carbon aviation fuel. The new SAF that Honeywell introduces is ethanol-to-jet fuel (ETJ).
Airlines can lower their carbon footprint by utilizing SAF, which is still a rather costly route with high demand and relatively low supply. Honeywell’s new technology could increase the efficiency of the production and may offer a new way to increase SAF production on a global scale.
The new ethanol-to-jet fuel (ETJ) processing technology allows the conversion of corn-based, cellulosic, or sugar-based ethanol into SAF. SimpleFlying reports that ethanol is predominantly produced from corn in the United States. Honeywell believes, depending on the grade and type of ethanol from feedstock used, that its technology could cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% when compared with petroleum-based jet fuel.
