Delta partners with Neste to advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Partnering with Neste, Delta Air Lines commits to a sustainable future by integrating Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to reduce emissions by 2030.

Renewable and circular solutions, Neste

The race towards a sustainable future in aviation is gaining momentum, spearheaded by initiatives from industry giants like Delta Air Lines and Neste. Delta has pledged to replace 10% of its jet fuel with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030, a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector. This commitment is part of a broader strategy to cut overall fuel usage annually through the next decade.

Overcoming industry challenges

SAF offers up to 80% lower emissions than traditional jet fuels. This ‘drop-in’ solution fits seamlessly into existing infrastructure, allowing today’s aircraft to fly cleaner without additional modifications. The partnership between Delta and Neste emphasizes not only the use of SAF but also the essential role of collaborative efforts in overcoming industry challenges.

Production levels insufficient

Amelia DeLuca, Delta's Chief Sustainability Officer, stresses the importance of SAF as the primary tool for the industry's transition to net-zero emissions. However, production levels are currently insufficient to meet daily global airline operations, which drives the partnership's agenda to enhance SAF availability and encourage supportive policies.

In addition to SAF adoption, Delta is focused on educational campaigns to dispel misconceptions about sustainable fuels and increase public awareness of their benefits. The partnership also explores logistical advancements, such as testing SAF transportation through existing pipeline systems.
